"Poema" comes from the Ancient Greek word ποίημα (poiēma), which literally means "a thing made"—emphasising the crafted nature of poetry. It passed into Latin as poēma, and from there into many modern languages. The root verb poiein means "to make" or "to create," which is also where we get the word poet—a maker of verse.
